General information

July 6, 1992 – diplomatic relations were established.

1997 - Diplomatic mission of Kazakhstan was opened in Bangkok.

January 2012 – Diplomatic mission was reorganized into the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of Thailand.

September 2012 – Embassy of the Kingdom of Thailand is opened in Astana.

Since May 2013 - Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Thailand is Marat Yessenbayev

Since February 2016 - Ambassador of Thailand to Kazakhstan is Nat Pinyowattanacheep.

Political cooperation

The official visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in July 1993 became an important stage in establishment of the relations between Kazakhstan and Thailand. The Agreement on the Establishment of the Joint Commission on bilateral cooperation between Governments of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kingdom of Thailand was signed.

The official visit of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand to Kazakhstan on April 17-20, 2005, gave the additional impetus to the development of the bilateral relations. The high guest was awarded by the Order “Dostyk” Second Degree.

Short term visit of the Princess of Thailand to Kazakhstan on April 6, 2015 and meeting with the governor of Almaty A.Yessimov gave additional dynamic to the development of the Kazakhstan-Thai interregional partnership.

As part of the exchange of high-level visits Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand S.Sathirathai (May 2005) and Prime Minister of Thailand T.Shinawatra (June 2006) visited Kazakhstan.

Cooperation between foreign ministries. In October 2004, S.Sathirathai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, visited Kazakhstan. Protocol on Cooperation between the Foreign Ministries was signed following the results of the negotiations. In May 2005, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev paid a working visit to Bangkok. On January 30- February 1, 2012 the visit of the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand J.Nonsrichai to Kazakhstan took place.

In January 2014 and February 2015 the Kazakh delegation led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Y.Ashikbayev visited Thailand within the framework of Nuclear Security Summit Sherpa. During the visit in 2015 the meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand N.Sinhaseni was held. Both sides mentioned the importance of the development of bilateral cooperation, intensification of trade, economic and investment cooperation, maintenance of the level of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

In May 2015, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Y.Ashikbayev visited Bangkok and participated at the 71st session of the UN ESCAP.

Inter-parliamentary cooperation. In October 2014 and January 2015, Member of Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan A.Samakova visited Thailand within the framework of the participation in the Executive Committee of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD).

On 8-12 October 2015, parliamentary delegation made ​​up of deputies A.Samakova, E.Tarasenko and S.Firkho visited Bangkok and met with Thai legislators during AFPPD General Assembly.

Inter-agency cooperation. On July 9, 2014 the visit of the Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of Civil Service Commission of Thailand V.Prasitsiriwongse to Kazakhstan took place. Memorandum of Understanding in the field of civil service between Kazakhstan and Thailand was signed.

On 11-12 February 2016, the Kazakhstani delegation consisting of the Chairman of the Regional Hub of Civil Service A.Baimenov and representatives of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Kazakhstan visited Bangkok. The delegation took part in the round table on the topic “Motivation and Compensation of Civil Servants”.

Inter-regional cooperation. During March 11-13, 2015, the Kazakh delegation consisting of the representatives of the apparatus of akim of Astana participated at the 3rd meeting of Governors and Mayors of “Asia-Europe” Forum and held the meeting with the Governor of Bangkok S.Paribatra.

Cooperation in the field of interethnic and interreligious harmony. On 9-11 June 2015, Secretary-General of World Fellowship of Buddhists P.Thayarri and Vice-Rector for International Affairs of the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University S.Chotiko participated at the V Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.

Multilateral cooperation. On 21-23 May 2015, Thai delegation headed by the Secretary-General of Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council K.Chutikul visited Kazakhstan. K.Chutikul met with Prime Minister of Kazakhstan K.Massimov and took part in the Astana Economic Forum.

Trade and economic cooperation

Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Thailand in January-November 2015 amounted to 69.9 million US dollars (export – 2.3 million, import – 67.6 million). The main exports are metals, imports – domestic and industrial equipments.

As of September 2015, the volume of Thai investments to Kazakhstan was 2.6 million US dollars, while Kazakhstan invested into Thai economy 7.7 million US dollars.

Investments. During August 1-16, 2013, the Head of Thailand Industrial Park «АМАТА Foundation» Vikrom Kromadit visited Kazakhstan. Purpose of visit was to explore the investments opportunities in industrial park of Kazakhstan.

In September 2013, international seminar on “Investment and business opportunities in Kazakhstan, Nigeria and South Africa” was held in Bangkok. In July 2014, thematic seminar on “Free trade between the Customs Union and Thailand” was held in Thailand. In August 2014, seminar on “Trade and investments opportunities between Kazakhstan and Thailand” was held in Bangkok.

During 2013-2015 a number of Thailand trade missions visited Kazakhstan to establish partnership relations with Kazakhstani businessmen and realization of investment projects.

On February 16, 2015 the international conference on “Investment and business opportunities in Kazakhstan” was held in Bangkok.

On May 11, 2015 the seminar "Kazakhstan and Thailand: new business opportunities" was organized in Bangkok with the support of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand.

On May 30 and June 6, 2015 a series of workshops on the topic "Investment opportunities of Kazakhstan and legal regulation of foreign investments" were organized for Thai businessmen.

On 15-18 June 2015 Kazakhstan was visited by Thai delegation consisting of more than 100 members who represent the leading Thai companies from various sectors, including agriculture, tourism, green energy, transport logistics, construction and services.

Energy. Thailand attaches great importance to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation with Kazakhstan in the field of energy and green economy. On March 5 and October 21, 2015, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Thailand M.Yessenbayev met with the Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Thailand N.Akrasani.

Green economy. During October 22-24, 2015, Thai delegation headed by the Deputy Director-General for Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Commerce of the Kingdom of Thailand M.Amatiakul participated at the 1st meeting of the international participants of EXPO 2017 and the International Forum “Future Energy”.

Tourism. One of the cooperation areas is tourism. Air Astana carries out 8 flights a week to Bangkok from Almaty and Astana. The annual flow of Kazakhstani tourists in Thailand is about 70 thousand.

In order to promote the tourist potential of Kazakhstan on 17-21 February 2016 Kazakhstan took part at the 18th Thai International Travel Fair in Bangkok. Kazakhstani pavilion was presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
